The Water Tower of Vinohrady: history, architecture, and an innovative future

10. 12. 2024

Vodárenská věž  (The Water Tower ) of Vinohrady stands in the heart of Prague’s lively district, as an imposing structure that has witnessed centuries of transformations. Built in 1882, this tower is much more than a functional building. With its Neo-Renaissance design and a history closely tied to urban development, the tower is now at the center of an ambitious project: transforming it into an innovative educational hub for future generations.

Originally designed as part of Prague’s water system, the Water Tower of Vinohrady played a crucial role in ensuring water supply to the district’s residents. At the time of its construction, Vinohrady was rapidly transforming from a quiet agricultural area into a bustling urban suburb.

The building was designed in 1882 by Antonín Turek, Prague’s municipal architect, to house steam engines and an underground reservoir. The engines pumped water from the reservoir, creating a gravity-fed supply system for nearby homes and businesses. The tower’s seventh floor housed a reservoir capable of holding up to 200 cubic meters of water.

Initially, water was pumped from the Vltava River until 1912 when the water source was relocated to a new facility in Káraný. This change improved the quality of the water supply for the districts of Strašnice, Žižkov, and Vršovice. In 1914, the steam engines were replaced with electric motors, marking a significant technological advancement. The water, treated at the Podolí plant, was then stored in underground tanks before being pumped to the tower for final distribution.

The Water Tower of Vinohrady is a captivating example of Neo-Renaissance architecture. Designed to combine functionality and beauty, it is distinguished by its yellow-ochre bricks, characteristic of Prague’s historic architecture, elegant arched windows, and refined ornamental decorations at its summit. With a height of approximately 50 meters and a strategic location in the Vinohrady district, the tower is a landmark visible from many parts of the city.

Today, its architecture is recognized as nationally significant. Although the building no longer serves any modern function related to water supply—following the removal of engines, pumps, and pipes—the symbolic and architectural value of the structure has been preserved through rehabilitation and protection efforts.

In 1993, the tower’s interior was converted to host offices and apartments, marking a functional reuse of this important historical building without altering its original beauty. The panoramic platform at the top is located approximately 40 meters above street level. In the past, it offered a commanding view of the surrounding area, though today it stands just slightly taller than the surrounding buildings.

One particularly striking element of its architecture is the presence of angel statues with clock faces at each corner of the tower. These symmetrically positioned angels are one of its most iconic features, along with the four medallions located below the clocks, which symbolically celebrate the Vinohrady district and its history.

In 1991, the Water Tower was officially recognized as a monument of cultural importance and was added to the Czech Ministry of Culture’s list, ensuring its long-term protection and symbolic value for the community and the city of Prague.

The new project for the Water Tower of Vinohrady represents a harmonious blend of history and innovation. The main idea is to transform the building into a state-of-the-art educational center dedicated to young people. This space will feature STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) labs, creative areas for artistic activities, and digital platforms for interactive experiences.

One of the main objectives is to make learning accessible and engaging, creating a space where young people can explore, create, and innovate. The tower itself will become a symbol of how old structures can be repurposed meaningfully to address modern challenges.

This project is not just about the regeneration of a building but aims to create a cultural and social landmark for the district. The Vinohrady community will benefit from a space where education, culture, and inclusivity intersect. Additionally, the tower will attract visitors and tourists interested in Prague’s industrial history, contributing to the local economy.

The transformation of the Water Tower of Vinohrady is part of a global trend of reclaiming industrial heritage. Increasingly, buildings that once served utilitarian purposes are being renewed for cultural, educational, or recreational uses. This project demonstrates that it is possible to preserve the past while adapting it for the future, creating value for society.

In an era of rapid technological advancement, initiatives like this offer a valuable opportunity to reflect on historical roots while embracing the possibilities of tomorrow. The Water Tower of Vinohrady is poised to become a symbol of resilience, creativity, and progress for future generations.
