The future of transport in Prague: a new state-of-the-art bridge over the Troja-Podbaba canal
A new bridge is scheduled to be built in the city of Prague in 2028. The bridge will span the navigable Troja-Podbaba Canal, replacing the existing bridge, which is not suitable in terms of height.
The project was conceived by the Nemec & Taller Architektur studio, which emerged as the winner of the architectural competition organized by the Directorate of Waterways of the Czech Republic. The purpose of the competition was to find a solution for the complex modification of the current bridge structure on Za Elektrárnou Street. The modification is aimed at ensuring a clearance height of seven meters for passing ships. The competition was divided into two phases. In the first phase, the Directorate of Waterways of the Czech Republic reviewed a total of 12 proposals. As a result of this first evaluation, the best five were sent to the final round. In the second phase, the proposal by the firm Nemec & Taller Architektur emerged as the winner. The second place was awarded to Ehl & Koumar Architekti, and the third place went to Lucid Architects Limited.
What particularly impressed the jury was the completeness and effectiveness of the winning project. The bridge designed by Nemec & Taller Architektur is characterized by a clean and elegant design, able to effectively integrate various modes of transport. The new bridge will therefore provide space for pedestrians and cyclists. The structure is also designed to have low maintenance costs and withstand the impact of a ship. The main advantage for ships will be the increased clearance height, which will be raised to seven meters, compared to the existing four meters at the current bridge.
An important transformation of the area surrounding the bridge is also planned. This will include the creation of a new pier, new pedestrian paths, seating steps along the water, and the extension of Stromovka Park up to the river’s biocorridor. The completion of the work is expected in 2029. To avoid possible overcrowding due to the shared space, Nemec & Taller Architektur has proposed the construction of a pavilion, a refreshment point, and restroom facilities outside the bridge structure, so that the individual functions are spread over a larger area.
A project aimed at modernizing the bridges along the Vltava River has been underway for a long time. Currently, ten structures are completed. The bridge designed by Nemec & Taller Architektur will therefore contribute to the realization of this river renewal program.
In conclusion, the new bridge will represent an innovative step forward in the transportation system, providing a safe navigation route for tall ships and improving navigation along the Vltava River.
